I wish you a noble chic Christmas

Why wish you a Merry Christmas when it’s more sophisticated to hope you have a Nobel Chic Christmas instead.  Christmas in Japan is full of winter wonder, hearts, dreams and … white angels.  Tokyo certainly still knows how to eclipse the Christmas decorations and style of other cities and puts on a commercial extravaganza.  Shopping malls and department stores brand their Christmas campaigns (after all, that’s what Christmas is all about), and there seems to be a race to see who can use the most evocative English adjectives.   (more…)

Shibuya in the snow

Shibuya (and no doubt the rest of Tokyo) has been covered with a layer of snow tonight.  As I was writing my previous post, it was really bucketing down outside and coating everything with a layer of white.  In as little as 20 minutes, the road outside was covered with an untouched, even white surface – apart from the wheel marks of the first car to drive through the middle of it. Snowing in Tokyo

It’s snowing in Tokyo!!  Tonight, about 3cm (so far, at 11:30pm) has fallen, and things have turned white.  I took some photos on my way home from my language class (around 10pm), but it’s become a lot more white since then.  (more…)

Trend Hunter reviews Mechakucha

The Trend Hunter website has found a new emerging trend: foreigners in Japan who wear face masks.  And it’s more true than used to be the case – I’ve seen plenty of foreigners this winter wearing masks.  Maybe on doctor’s orders like me the other week, or maybe it’s really catching on.  I expected people to stare at the funny foreigner wearing the mask, but nobody flinched – except some foreign tourists I walked past in Shibuya.
