I just got back from a week in New Zealand, where I went tramping (Kiwese for bushwalking) on the Tongariro Northern Circuit with Mark & Jen. This is a four day walk around Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe, with overnight stops in well-equipped Department of Conservation (DOC) huts. It’s an extension of the Tongariro Crossing, which is a day walk. After all, why go all that way just for a day?
I’ll put up some posts over the next short while with some photos, short videos and other details of the trip. I’ve uploaded some of the better photos from my trip to this website. Click the link over in the right hand column.
In the meantime, here’s a short video I took when descending Mt Ngauruhoe. This mountain is a 2,287m classically shaped conical volcano, and its shape dominates the local area. It last erupted in the mid 1970s. There is steam coming out of a vent in the rim of the crater at the top. For four days, Ngauruhoe was there towering over us, as we circumnavigated it.
I’ll post more on Tongariro soon.
