Hong Kong

Hong Kong photos

I’m back from Hong Kong this week, and back to work in Tokyo, so here are some of the photos & highlights. (more…)

Last night in Hong Kong

Nuri’s gone, the weather is clear again, and I’ve just had a nice dinner out with Kana and Jimmy. I caught the second last Star Ferry for the night across from Kowloon to Central, then the tram back to Wan Chai. If the ferry is the best AUD0.70 ride in the world, surely trundling through Wan Chai on the upper deck of a wooden tram for AUD0.65 is not far behind. (more…)

Nuri’s a fizzer

Nuri has weakened into a tropical storm, but heavy rain may still be on the way.

Where’s Suzie Wong?

I’ve just been down to Wan Chai for a walk, but couldn’t find Suzie Wong. In fact, I couldn’t find anyone much at all. Typhoon Nuri has kept everyone holed up at home. Most shops are boarded up, and I saw one hoarding had been blown down. (more…)

Nuri

This is the view out my Hong Kong hotel window at 9am on Friday. It’s unusually quiet. The usual traffic jam is gone, and the buses are empty. It’s because we’re waiting for Typhoon Nuri, and warning signal 8 is in force. (more…)

Mango pudding

I’m visiting Kana & Jimmy in their suburb out in the New Territories. Here’s our dessert – carp shaped mango pudding. (more…)

Reverse culture shock already?

“Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.” I’m not sure what world I’m in at the moment. Speaking Japanese doesn’t get me anywhere, but I hear Japanese being spoken all around me. There are foreigners speaking English everywhere, and Western style surroundings. (more…)

Hong Kong by night

Kana and I are sitting on the Kowloon side watching the lights come alive across the harbour. We’ll watch the light show in a few minutes, then go to dinner with Kana’s husband Jimmy, who is just about to finish work. (more…)

Hong Kong

Arrived in Hong Kong. Both Japanese and Australian mobiles seen to be working. Staying across the road from Happy Valley. (more…)

Summer holidays

Why did I get up at 5.30am to be at Narita at 7.30? Because I’m going to Hong Kong for a few days. I’m expecting it to be just as hot as Tokyo, but this week is my week off work, so better make the most of it. Not sure if i’ll blog while I’m away, but I’ll be back to Tokyo on Sunday evening. (more…)
