It served as a port for early international trade, and also as a port for the short ferry ride across to Shimonoseki on the Honshu side of the Kanmon Strait, before the bridge was built. Everything here is dubbed as "retro" for the tourism market.

It's 9 years since I visitied Pohnpei, the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia. Kolonia, the capital, was a wild-west type town. I visited ancient ruins at Nan Madol, climbed Sokehs Rock, and drank sakau with the locals.

I spent a day on the Republic of Nauru in January 1999 when I was travelling through to Micronesia and Guam. Since then, Air Nauru has gone broke, the Pacific Solution has come and gone, and a Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold medallist is now the Nauruan President.
